Trilho da Fórnea: The Natural Amphitheatre
Morning
Start early and head to the village of Alcaria, the departure point for the Trilho da Fórnea, a trail that invites you to slow down. The route covers around 4.5 km, with plenty of time to stop and take in your surroundings.
The path winds through low-lying vegetation and gentle climbs before revealing a natural amphitheatre carved by erosion. Here, the landscape opens up and your gaze stretches across the vastness of the rocks, the green blanketing the valley, and the waterfall that makes itself heard after heavy winter rain.
This is one of those places where you want to sit down, breathe deeply, and simply be.
Extra tip: Bring water, a hat, and comfortable footwear. The trail is a circular route on compacted earth with some gentle inclines. Allow time to take photographs, and if you are travelling with
children, encourage them to spot the native plants for which the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros is
so rich.
Trilho da Fórnea: Practical tips to make the most of your visit
- Set off early: The drive from Hotel Miramar São Pedro de Moel to Alcaria takes around 50 minutes. Leaving early means you can enjoy the morning at a leisurely pace.
- Choose the right trail for you: The Trilho da Fórnea is an accessible route of around 4.5 km (circular) with minimal elevation change, making it ideal for families and occasional walkers.
- For a greater challenge: You can extend the walk up to Cova da Velha, but the climb is demanding and is only recommended for those accustomed to hiking and uneven terrain.
- Best time to visit: The Fórnea waterfall is only visible after prolonged rainfall, but the trail is beautiful at any time of year. In summer, aim to set out in the early hours of the morning to avoid the heat.
