Cultural heritage in São Pedro de Moel: lighthouse, museum and local history
Although the Pinhal de Leiria was devastated in 2017 by a wildfire that consumed more than 80% of its area, its heart never stopped beating. It still pulses in São Pedro de Moel.
In January 2026, it suffered another blow from the fury of Storm Kristin, which swept through the region and brought down many of the trees that had survived.
Also known as Pinhal do Rei, it was planted over 700 years ago to protect the dunes and supply timber for shipbuilding.

Cultural heritage in São Pedro de Moel: lighthouse, museum and local history
São Pedro de Moel is shaped not only by the sea, but also by its rich cultural heritage. One of the top attractions in São Pedro de Moel is the Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse, in operation since 1912. This iconic landmark still guides sailors and offers some of the best coastal views in the region.
According to local legend, the lighthouse takes its name from the Duchess of Faro who, mourning her lost love, the Duke of Caminha, found roses here and named them saudades. It is said that this was the very place where they once swore eternal love.
Another must-visit in São Pedro de Moel is the Afonso Lopes Vieira House-Museum. Once home to the renowned poet, the museum is open during summer and showcases books, personal belongings and memories of a time when São Pedro de Moel was a popular retreat for artists and writers.
For a more relaxed experience, visit Afonso Lopes Vieira Square. With sea views, cafés, small shops and open-air terraces, it is one of the best places to soak up the atmosphere of São Pedro de Moel. Stay a little longer and enjoy a front-row view of the sunset.
Architectural heritage: modernism by the sea
São Pedro de Moel preserves centuries of history and a remarkable architectural heritage. From the ancient legacy of the Monks of Alcobaça to the elegant summers of wealthy families, São Pedro de Moel grew in harmony with the sea and the pine forest.
The urban plan was designed by architect José de Lima Franco. The modernist houses, signed by names such as Camilo Korrodi and Charters Monteiro, reveal an authentic connection to the landscape and demonstrate a deep respect for the character of the place.
Industrial tourism: glass and moulds in Marinha Grande
Just a few minutes from São Pedro de Moel, Marinha Grande tells the story of the glass and mould industry in Portugal. The local museums show how craftsmanship was passed down through generations and shaped the identity of the region.
Visit the Glass Museum
