Leiria Castle, historic old town and regional sweets
Morning
Start the day in Leiria, just a 30 minutes´ drive from São Pedro de Moel. The medieval castle, commanding the hilltop, is your gateway to the past. From up there, linger over the finest panoramic view of the city.
Head down to the historic centre, stroll along the streets and take a break in Praça Rodrigues Lobo, where cafés and terraces bring the heart of the city to life. Don’t miss the chance to try Brisas do Lis, Leiria’s signature sweet. If time allows before lunch, you can also visit the Cathedral, equally set in the historic centre.
Extra tip: Leiria Castle opens at 09:30. If you’re travelling with family, visit the m|i|mo – Museum of the Moving Image. It’s right next to the castle and has exhibitions for all ages.

Batalha Monastery: gothic masterpiece
Late Morning and Early Afternoon
About fifteen minutes’ drive from Leiria, the village of Batalha welcomes you with the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
It is one of the great icons of Gothic and Manueline architecture in Portugal. Walk through the
cloisters, admire the intricate detail of the Unfinished Chapels, and feel the full weight of
Portuguese history.
Outside, the surroundings are peaceful and perfect for photographs and quiet reflection. Lunch in Batalha will delight your palate. At one of the local traditional restaurants, try regional specialities such as tachadéu. For dessert, make sure you save room for cavacas from Reguengo do Fetal (traditional pastry).
Extra tip: Skip the queues and make the most of your time by buying your tickets for
the Batalha Monastery online in advance.
